Food is Notstalgic
Food often serves as a nostalgic time machine, whisking us back to moments that have shaped us. Take, for instance, my stepmother Judy's Apple Cake. Simple yet sublime, it's made with green apples, warming spices, and oil (no butter!), creating a moist bundt cake that's pure magic. But it's not just about the cake itself; it's about the memories it holds. Picture this: family gatherings, laughter filling the air, candles casting a warm glow on half-empty wine glasses and plates scattered with remnants of dessert. That's where the Apple Cake shines brightest, becoming a cherished part of our shared history.
I still make the apple cake on a semi-regular occurrence, provided we are having a get-together that would warrant its appearance. Every time I eat that cake, I'm transported back to those joy-filled evenings. As a chef, I believe in the power of food to evoke such memories. That's why I make it a point to incorporate my clients' nostalgic favorites into their menus. Because food isn't just about sustenance; it's about connection, about honoring the stories that make us who we are. So here's to the Apple Cake, and to all the foods that weave themselves into the fabric of our lives, shaping our memories and our identities along the way.
